Pouhé čtyři údery stačil v zápase vyprodukovat bývalý šampion Ankalajev a nenavázal na svůj březnový triumf nad Pereirou, kdy v pětikolové bitvě brazilského bijce připravil o titul. Tentokrát ale padl během pouhých 80 vteřin, což šokovalo i mnohé odborníky. „Nejsem překvapený,“ usmál se vítěz souboje. Jeho výkon ocenil i jeden z největších rivalů divize – Jiří Procházka, který mu tleskal zpovzdálí.
Zatímco po prvním střetnutí si na zdravotní potíže stěžoval Pereira a tvrdil, že byl připraven pouze na 40 %, nyní se podobný scénář opakuje na straně Ankalajeva. Na sociální sítě dokonce uniklo video, na kterém si ruský bojovník zhruba tři týdny před duelem nechává lékařem prohlížet zraněné žebro. Jeho tým se ho prý snažil ze zápasu stáhnout, ale marně.
„V přípravě se stalo hodně věcí, ale to by měl říct on sám. Kdyby to bylo na mně, nenechal bych ho bojovat. Ale je to dospělý muž a rozhoduje se sám,“ napsal na sociálních sítích Ankalajevův manažer Ali Abdelaziz. Na jeho slova navázal i novinář Léo Guimaraes, který zveřejnil zmíněné video: „Mohu potvrdit, že jeho tým ho chtěl stáhnout ze zápasu kvůli zlomenému žebru. Bylo to zhruba dvacet dnů před duelem.“
Zlomené žebro patří mezi nejvážnější zranění, které může bojovníka výrazně omezit. Negativně ovlivňuje dýchání, pohyb i schopnost absorbovat údery do těla. Část fanoušků to ale přesto považuje za výmluvu, proč Ankalajev tak rychle prohrál.
A právě na poraněné místo Pereira v závěru bez milosti zamířil, při dobíjení soupeře zasadil několik tvrdých loktů přímo do oblasti žeber. Od dalších úderů Ankalajeva zachránil až hlavní rozhodčí, jenž zápas ukončil. Aréna v Las Vegas v tu chvíli explodovala nadšením.
Jisté je však to, že šlo o nejslabší výkon ruského bojovníka v rámci působení v UFC. „Pereira nechtěl jen vyhrát, chtěl ukázat i něco navíc. Bylo vidět, že ho tým Ankalajeva naštval,“ připomněl Martin Karaivanov, trenér a manažer Jiřího Procházky. Ruský bojovník si totiž během posledních měsíců svými výroky na sociálních sítích poštval nejen fanoušky, ale i soupeře, včetně samotného Pereiry a Procházky.

Zatímco Pereira se dokázal vrátit na výsluní polotěžké váhy, poražený Ankalajev si pohoršil a klesl na první příčku žebříčku, o kterou se nyní dělí s Procházkou. Český ranař se tak ocitl v ideální pozici pro vyjednávání o titulový zápas. Do hry však vstupuje také ve skvělé formě bojující Carlos Ulberg, který si vítězstvím nad Dominickem Reyesem připsal už devátý úspěch v řadě.
