The Alabama Crimson Tide secured their fifth consecutive win with a narrow 27-24 victory over the Missouri Tigers. But the game took a frightening turn in the first quarter when freshman wide receiver Derrick Meadows suffered a brutal hit that left him motionless on the field.
Ranked eighth nationally, Alabama had a rocky start to the season, falling 31-17 to Florida State in their season opener. Since then, they’ve bounced back with five straight wins.
Their matchup against Missouri was anything but easy. The Tigers struck first, and although the Crimson Tide responded with 17 unanswered points, Missouri battled fiercely throughout.
The first quarter proved to be the most dramatic-not just for the scoreboard, but for the chilling moment when Meadows lay unconscious on the turf at Faurot Field.
The terrifying moment that silenced the stadium
With 3:40 remaining in the first quarter, quarterback Ty Simpson targeted Meadows along the right sideline. The freshman had barely made contact with the ball when Missouri safety Marvin Burks Jr. delivered a devastating hit.
The impact sent Meadows crashing to the ground, where his head struck the turf. To the horror of players, coaches, and fans, he remained completely motionless.
Alabama’s medical staff rushed onto the field. After several tense seconds, Meadows regained consciousness and was able to walk off under his own power-with assistance from two staffers. He gave a reassuring thumbs-up to the Alabama crowd as he headed toward the locker room.
Fans and media are still awaiting an official update on Meadows’ condition.
The aftermath of Meadows’ injury
As Meadows exited the field, officials ejected Burks for targeting and assessed a 15-yard penalty against Missouri, allowing Alabama to continue its drive.
Later in the second quarter, Simpson capitalized on the penalty by connecting with Isaiah Horton for a 16-yard touchdown pass, giving Alabama a 14-7 lead that would prove pivotal.
