Deion Sanders revealed that his son, Shedeur Sanders, is handling the transition to the NFL with remarkable composure, even after being named the Cleveland Browns’ backup quarterback.
The young QB is keeping a positive mindset as he awaits his first regular-season snap as after an impressive career at Colorado under his father’s guidance, Shedeur entered the 2025 NFL Draft and was selected by Cleveland in the fifth round.
Shedeur Sanders shuts down reporter who tried to make him mad about role with Browns
Selected 144th overall, he proved he can play at an NFL level with a strong outing against the Carolina Panthers in preseason, but was ultimately named third on the depth chart behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel at the time.
“Shedeur’s doing good,” Deion told Romi Bean of CBS Colorado. “Mentally, emotionally, psychologically he’s doing good.
“He’s smiling, they can’t knock the smile off his face. He keeps on smiling. Not that they’re trying to, but a lot of media personalities are.
“I can’t wait until he get his opportunity and he do his thing.”
The former Buffaloes quarterback completed 74 percent of his passes for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, helping lead Colorado to a 9-4 record yet despite these accomplishments, he began the season as the Browns’ third-string QB.
Sanders officially one stop closer to NFL debut
Shedeur has spent much of his rookie season waiting for a chance to take the field. For the first five weeks, he dressed as the emergency quarterback, supporting Flacco and Gabriel from the sideline. Now, after the QB shuffle, he’s been elevated to the active backup role.
Shedeur will dress for Cleveland’s Week 6 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers as the QB2, giving him his first opportunity to prepare as an active backup in a regular-season game.
This promotion allows him to observe Gabriel’s starts closely while learning the nuances of the NFL game firsthand in London.
“The big thing there is all of us play our role throughout the week and on Sunday,” Stefanski said. “Obviously that backup quarterback role is a little bit different. We are doing everything we can to support the starter, and then you have to be ready in a moment’s notice.
“That’s just the life of backup players at every position and we’ve said that here, over the years, that you have to stay ready so you don’t have to get ready.
“But again, that’s our job as coaches, as players, to be ready when called upon.”
Is Shedeur ready to play?
Deion remains confident that his son’s mental and emotional readiness will serve him well when his chance arrives.
With his trademark smile intact and a professional approach to practice and preparation, Shedeur is using the QB2 role to refine his skills, study defensive schemes, and acclimate to the NFL’s speed-all while remaining patient and focused.
Though he has yet to see game action, Shedeur Sanders’ recent promotion represents a meaningful step in his journey, signaling that the Browns trust his preparation, intelligence, and ability to contribute when called upon.
