A furious NBA fan has taken things to a new level – threatening to serve LeBron James with legal papers at Crypto.com Arena during a Lakers game after feeling deceived by the superstar’s recent publicity stunt.
The controversy began when James teased a “second decision” announcement, leading many to believe he was finally addressing retirement.
Instead, the 39-year-old shocked fans by revealing it was an advertisement for Hennessy – a move that instantly backfired. The backlash was swift, with critics accusing the Lakers icon of everything from “attention-seeking” to “selling out.”
Among the most enraged fans was 29-year-old Andrew Garcia, who filed a small claims lawsuit against James for fraud and deception. Garcia insists he’s not backing down and claims he’s prepared to serve LeBron in person at an NBA game if that’s what it takes.
“This isn’t going away,” the furious fan says
“In small claims, I cannot serve his representation,” Garcia said, according to The Athletic’s Jordan Fee-Platt. “Even if they’re willing to accept process. It’s a California guideline,” he explained.
Nevertheless, “If he’s unwilling to get served at his residence, the Beverly Hills address that’s listed on the filing, I’m going to have to have a process server serve him at Crypto.com Arena during a game. This is not going away.”
Garcia told The Athletic that he’s spoken to LeBron’s legal team, including New York-based attorney Robert Strent, who allegedly laughed upon hearing about the case. Strent did not respond to requests for comment.
Problems mount for LeBron
The ordeal comes at a tough time for the Lakers. Shortly after the failed ad campaign, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that LeBron will miss the first 3-4 weeks of the 2025-26 NBA season due to injury – leaving fans disappointed once again.
The team’s opening schedule won’t offer much relief either, featuring two games each against the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves, including the highly anticipated matchup with Golden State on October 21.
As LeBron recovers and the lawsuit looms, one thing’s for sure – his latest off-court move has left more than just a bad taste in fans’ mouths.
