Mac Jones appears to have everything under control as the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback. The five-year veteran is undefeated in the three games he’s started in place of the injured Brock Purdy. Fans and analysts have speculated that this success could spark tension between the two players, but general manager John Lynch has dismissed that notion.
Purdy has faced a challenging 2025 NFL season. The star quarterback suffered “turf toe” in the opening game against the Seattle Seahawks and experienced a setback in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
So far, the 2023 NFC champion has played only two games, posting a 1-1 record. In his absence, Jones hasn’t just kept the team afloat-he’s made it shine.
Jones’s strong performance has fueled speculation about the dynamic between him and Purdy. However, Lynch firmly denied any friction between the two.
Purdy is happy for the team-and for Jones
In a press conference, via the Daily Mail, Lynch stated, “I do wholeheartedly believe that Brock is nothing but happy for our team.” He praised Purdy’s self-confidence and humility.
Lynch added that Purdy is working tirelessly to return to the field: “And I think we all feel blessed and fortunate that we found a guy to be our backup this year who can come in and play like a starter.”
As for Jones, Lynch said he’s doing an outstanding job. He emphasized, “Some of those innate abilities that we saw back in college have come to the forefront, and it’s cool to see that happen on a big stage.”
Jones himself has dismissed any rumors of conflict. Speaking to the press after the Week 5 game against the Rams, he said, “They brought me here to play as a backup, and that’s my job.”
When will Brock Purdy return?
The 49ers haven’t provided a timetable for Purdy’s return. Initially, specialists estimated that turf toe injuries typically take two to five weeks to heal.
However, after his relapse two weeks ago, that timeline has been extended. For now, Purdy is ruled out for the Week 6 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Fortunately, Jones knows his role well. “I’m just trying to get some wins for him [Purdy] so it helps us down the line,” he said-and so far, he’s doing just that.
