Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian came with receipts after his Longhorns stunned the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, clapping back hard at the critics who wrote his team off after a shaky start to the season.
Following the stunning 23-6 beatdown in the Red River Rivalry, Sarkisian didn’t mince words.
“It’s easy to succumb to the outside noise. And there was a lot of sh*t getting talked about our team, and I think they responded,” Sarkisian told The New York Times after the dominant win at the Cotton Bowl.
Texas backed its coach
His team backed up his fiery words with a historic performance. The Texas defense completely suffocated the high-powered Sooners, holding them without an offensive touchdown-the first time the program has shut out a top-10 opponent from the end zone since 1979.
They tormented Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer in his return from hand surgery, sacking him five times and intercepting him three times.
The dominance wasn’t limited to one side of the ball. Quarterback Arch Manning managed the offense smoothly with 166 yards and a touchdown, while Ryan Niblett delivered the knockout blow with a dazzling 75-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The Longhorns are back in the fight
The victory-Texas’s second straight over Oklahoma for the first time since 2008-09-handed the Sooners their first loss and revived the Longhorns’ College Football Playoff hopes.
“If we can play the way we played today, we’re plenty good enough to compete with any team in our conference,” Sarkisian fired back at the doubters. “But we’ve got to play that way.”
