Der ehemalige Premier-League-Schiedsrichter Mark Clattenberg hat offen über den schlimmsten Fehler seiner Laufbahn gesprochen – und das 18 Jahre nach dem Vorfall.
In der „Daily Mail“-Podcastreihe „Whistleblowers“ erinnerte sich Clattenberg an das Merseyside-Derby zwischen Liverpool und Everton im Oktober 2007, das er damals leitete.
„Ich hatte bereits das Manchester-Derby und das Nordlondon-Derby gepfiffen. Dann bekam ich Everton gegen Liverpool. Ich will es nicht als Ausrede verstanden wissen – aber ich hatte bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nichts Vergleichbares erlebt.“
[–>Clattenberg gab zu, die hitzige Partie völlig unterschätzt zu haben: „Es war ein Derby der Arbeiterklasse – und ich habe es komplett verbockt und falsch gemacht.“
Er schickte zwei Everton-Spieler vom Platz – Tony Hibbert und Phil Neville. Besonders der Platzverweis gegen Hibbert sorgte damals für Diskussionen, weil es so wirkte, als habe Steven Gerrard den Schiedsrichter umgestimmt. Clattenberg stellte klar: „Es sah so aus, als hätte Gerrard etwas zu mir gesagt, und ich hätte daraufhin meine Entscheidung geändert. Das ist natürlich nie passiert.“
Der Referee gab außerdem zu, eine klare Fehlentscheidung getroffen zu haben: „Der schlimmste Fehler war am Ende des Spiels. Jamie Carragher zog Joleon Lescott im Strafraum – ein klarer Elfmeter. Wenn ich ihn gegeben hätte, hätte Everton die Chance auf den Ausgleich gehabt.“

Nach dem Derby wurde Clattenberg heftig attackiert: „Ich bekam Morddrohungen und durfte sechs Jahre lang kein Everton-Spiel mehr pfeifen.“
Heute sieht der frühere Premier-League-Schiedsrichter den Tag als Wendepunkt: „Ich verlor damals meine Fähigkeit, Entscheidungen zu treffen. Die Fans erinnern sich nur an diesen einen Moment – Fußballfans verzeihen dir nie, egal, wie viele richtige Entscheidungen du später triffst.“
Clattenberg, der mittlerweile beim „BBC“-Kultformat „Gladiators“ als Show-Schiedsrichter auftritt, nennt das Merseyside-Derby von 2007 bis heute das einzige Spiel, das er gern noch einmal pfeifen würde.
