Travis Kelce doesn’t just know football – he knows how to turn basketball finesse into gridiron dominance. On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs star pulled off a move that left Detroit Lions defenders baffled, later revealing that his inspiration wasn’t another NFL player, but one of the greatest big men in NBA history.
The Chiefs hosted the Lions at Arrowhead Stadium in a crucial matchup aimed at reviving their playoff hopes after a rocky start to the season.
The result? A commanding 30-17 victory. Patrick Mahomes threw for three touchdowns and 257 yards, 70 of which came from a rejuvenated Kelce, who’s bouncing back after a quiet 2024 season.
Kelce’s standout moment was a slick shimmy that left safety Brian Branch and linebacker Jack Campbell grasping at air. After the play, the tight end sat down and paid homage to the NBA legend who inspired the move.
What do Kelce and Hakeem have in common?
In a now-viral clip, Kelce can be seen saying, “They don’t wanna see me in the post, man… They don’t wanna see me in the post.”
He then adds, “Hit them with ‘Hakeem the Dream,'” referencing retired Houston Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon.
A Hall of Famer and two-time NBA champion, Olajuwon was famous for the “Dream Shake” – a deceptive move where he fakes one way, then cuts the other en route to the basket.
Kelce mirrored that exact motion on the field, dodging Branch’s tackle and slipping past Campbell for nine extra yards after the catch.

In a moment that sparked both praise and playful criticism online, the Chiefs star took the opportunity to educate his younger teammates.
“You weren’t part of the ’90s,” he tells one offscreen. “You would have seen Hakeem Olajuwon hit ’em with the ‘Dream Shake,'” he explains.
He wraps it up with, “Do your research, you gotta do your research. I grew up watching that, so I emulated that. Shout out to ‘The Dream.'”
And just like that, two legends – one from the hardwood, one from the gridiron – collided in a moment that fans won’t soon forget.
