If the Philadelphia Eagles are going to take over the NFL running an innovative play of their own creation, it only makes sense that the way to stop the play might involve creativity of its own.
The Minnesota Vikings tried to find the key to stopping the tush push, and it involves a unique strategy. When the Eagles lined up to go for the tush push Sunday early in their 28-22 win, the Vikings’ defense lined up with one man literally laying down right in front of the center.

It looked … a little strange compared to a normal defensive alignment.
While it was an inventive idea, it didn’t work on the first try. On the Eagles’ first drive of the day, Jalen Hurts converted on a fourth-and-1. The Vikings managed to create another fourth down later in the drive, but Hurts made them pay with a 37-yard touchdown to A.J. Brown.
Retired Eagles center Jason Kelce, the man literally at the center of the play becoming a huge weapon for Philadelphia, weighed in on the Vikings’ strategy during Sunday’s game. Kelce called it an “interesting strategy,” pointing out that it creates a “log jam” at the spot where the ball usually goes.
Kelce added that he enjoys seeing teams come up with new ways to try and stop the tush push.

The Eagles’ signature play has come under controversy in recent years. An offseason vote by the league’s 32 teams was held to try and ban the play, but it did not pass. Because of that, the Eagles have leaned on the tush push as often as ever to start the 2025 season.
Traditional defenses haven’t been strong enough to stop Hurts from lunging for an extra yard on third or fourth downs. The Vikings’ strategy may not have worked immediately Sunday, but the team deserves credit for thinking outside the box.
