Michael Vick isn’t holding back as Norfolk State prepares to open its MEAC schedule – and his message to quarterback Otto Khuns is crystal clear. The Hall of Fame-bound former NFL star turned head coach believes the next stretch of games could define the young signal-caller’s entire football journey.
“This is a very important five weeks for Otto,” Vick said during the MEAC Coaches Call. “It’s probably the most important five games of his life. He has a chance to define his story, write his own story, in the next couple of weeks.”
Khuns’ story has already taken several unexpected turns this season. Despite being a veteran presence on the roster, he didn’t open the year as the starting quarterback losing the QB1 job to USF transfer Israel Carter. But when Carter faltered early, Vick turned back to Khuns – and the junior hasn’t looked back since.
Vick’s words to his team
Through seven games, Khuns has thrown for 1,355 yards and eight touchdowns, highlighted by a 340-yard performance against Sacred Heart. Even with the team’s 1-6 record, his command of the offense has sparked optimism for the Spartans as they enter the heart of conference play.
Vick said he’s viewing the team’s early struggles as a “trial run,” calling the out-of-conference games “our preseason.” Now, he’s focused on turning the page.
“I just told them, let’s look at that as our trial run – it’s over with,” Vick said.
“We know what we can do, we know what we’ve got. Now it’s time to lock in and just have fun.”
The important thing is how you finish: Vick
For Norfolk State, that means embracing the mantra that Vick has been preaching all season: finish strong.
“Ultimately, for us, it’s about finishing,” he said. “We come out fast, which is what we preach, but it’s not how you start – it’s how you finish.”
Now, all eyes are on Khuns to see if he can lead the Spartans through what Vick calls the defining stretch of his career.
