Jerry Jones is attempting to orchestrate a move that could restore his reputation among fans, despite the ongoing resentment many still harbor toward him for trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers just a week before the 2025 season began.
That move broke the hearts of Cowboys supporters, yet somehow, Jones has a knack for making controversial decisions that, more often than not, eventually prove him right. Dallas is off to a far better start than anyone anticipated, as evidenced by their most recent game, where they didn’t just defeat the Washington Commanders, they completely humiliated them. A result that few could have imagined just weeks earlier.
Maxx Crosby, from rumor to possible reality
Maxx Crosby worries Tom Brady with an intense tackle that could have injured a Las Vegas coach
Now, the Cowboys’ owner and general manager is pursuing another bold move, one that could significantly bolster a defense that remains the team’s Achilles’ heel.
What began as a simple rumor has gained remarkable traction in recent days and could soon become a real possibility, though, as always, there’s a financial obstacle that complicates things.
Jones dreams of bringing Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby to Dallas. However, any team acquiring him would immediately absorb a guaranteed cap hit of roughly $53 million, distributed as follows: $20.3 million in 2025 and $30 million in 2026, even before his $27 million salary for 2027 kicks in.
Such numbers would impose a heavy burden on the Cowboys’ salary cap, requiring Jones and his front office to analyze the move carefully. Moreover, while Crosby’s contract from 2027 to 2029 isn’t fully guaranteed, his 2027 salary becomes guaranteed in March 2026, meaning that if the deal goes through, it would total $80 million over two and a half years.
Although no formal negotiations have begun between Jones and the Raiders, reports suggest the Cowboys are seriously considering pursuing Crosby to reinforce their defense, a glaring need if they intend to sustain their strong start. For now, the idea remains a rumor, but one that’s rapidly gaining credibility and could soon turn into reality.
The Raiders respond to the Maxx Crosby rumors
Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, the Raiders have moved swiftly to address speculation surrounding their star player. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, team executives met with Crosby to make their position clear:
The Raiders met with star DE Maxx Crosby today to let him know they aren’t shopping him and won’t trade him.” He added, “While other teams are interested, the Raiders aren’t interested in moving their best player, and Crosby wants to stay in Las Vegas.
Pelissero later wrote.
Nobody wants to win more than Maxx Crosby, and he wants to do it with the Raiders. Despite various rumors with the trade deadline two weeks away, the face of the franchise isn’t leaving Las Vegas.
Still, as both franchises stir the waters, one truth remains: in the NFL, nothing is ever truly off the table.
