For the first time in franchise history, Inter Miami will play for the MLS title. One year removed from being bounced out of the first round, Miami advanced to the MLS Cup on Saturday behind a definitive 5-1 win over New York City FC at home.

Tadeo Allende picked up a stunning hat trick in the win, continuing an incredible postseason run for the Argentinian forward. But it was an overall outstanding effort for Miami, who looks completely unstoppable heading into the title game.

Allende pulled Miami to an early lead behind a first-half brace, scoring in the 14th and 23rd minutes off a stellar shot and a stellar header, respectively. But in the 37th minute, NYCFC took one back, with homegrown Justin Haak nailing a header of his own off a free kick.

Emotions were high in the win-or-go-home matchup, occasionally becoming chippy. Referee Jon Freemon gave out eight total yellow cards in the matchup, at one allowing a lengthy stoppage in the first half that quickly devolved into shoving.

Still, it quickly started to feel like Miami’s win was inevitable. Mateo Silvetti seemed to secure the win with a goal in the 67th minute. In the 83rd minute, Telasco Segovia scored off a Jordi Alba backheel pass to cap the win. And in the 89th minute, Allende completed his hat trick to turn it into a full-on blowout.

Miami has had its struggles at different points this season. But, so far, in the postseason, that have looked unstoppable. Saturday marks the team’s third straight game with at least four goals, with the team amassing 17 total goals across five playoff games.

Though six of those goals, fittingly, below to star midfielder Lionel Messi, eight of those goals belong to Allende, who has been the true breakout star of the postseason for Miami. Allende has scored in every playoff game so far, scoring braces in three of those games before Saturday’s hat trick.

Inter Miami will host the MLS Cup, due to total point accumulation, and will face off against the winner of San Diego FC-Vancouver Whitecaps, who play the Western Conference Final later on Saturday. But if Miami plays like it did on Saturday, either of those teams will have their hands full.

The Big Picture: Sam Darnold ‘Grateful’ for Vikings Stint and Landing in Seattle

RENTON, Wash. – Sam Darnold says there’s no hard feelings between him and the Minnesota Vikings after signing a three-year, $100 million deal to join the Seattle Seahawks in free agency this offseason. Without that stint, he wouldn't have landed the nine-figure contract and start for another playoff contender."I’m so grateful," Darnold told me, while we talked in a hallway outside the team’s indoor practice facility on Friday. "I keep using that word, but it’s true. I’m grateful for my time there and to come into a situation like this, with the coaching staff that we have and our locker room, just how close-knit and how tight we are. It’s such a good situation. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else now." Darnold’s sentiment makes sense, considering the Seahawks are in a prime playoff position at 8-3 and the Vikings, who […]

No. 6 Oregon saves its seat in the College Football Playoff with win at Washington

When Washington marched 69 yards in 13 plays and nearly six minutes of game time Saturday at Husky Stadium, it looked like Oregon's College Football Playoff bid was in jeopardy. The Huskies had just made it a five-point game with a bit less than nine minutes remaining in a rivalry showdown between Pac-12-turned-Big Ten foes.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIn the blink of an eye, Ducks quarterback Dante Moore put questions about his team's future to bed. More specifically, three plays from scrimmage later, on a third-and-9 from the Oregon 36-yard line, Moore fired a strike over the middle to wideout Malik Benson. The senior receiver elevated and extended to make the catch. As he landed, he might as well as picked up a speed boost. He zoomed 64 yards to the end zone for a touchdown that restored a two-score lead for the Ducks (11-1, 8-1 […]
