Com a vitória por 2 a 1 sobre o Cruz Azul, em Doha, o Flamengo garantiu presença na semifinal da Copa Intercontinental e agora se prepara para enfrentar o Pyramids, do Egito. A partida será disputada no sábado (13), às 14h (de Brasília), novamente no Catar. O vencedor avança para a decisão do torneio e enfrentará o Paris Saint-Germain no dia 17.
O Pyramids chega para esse duelo em seu momento mais importante desde a fundação em 2008. Em junho deste ano, o clube conquistou pela primeira vez a Champions League da África, superando o Mamelodi Sundowns no agregado. Essa conquista abriu caminho para a disputa da Copa Intercontinental, na qual já eliminou o Auckland City, campeão da Oceania, e o Al-Ahli, campeão da Ásia.
Mesmo vivendo grande momento continental, o time egípcio vem de uma goleada sofrida por 6 a 1 diante do National Bank, em jogo válido pela Copa da Liga Egípcia. A derrota não preocupa a comissão técnica, já que o Pyramids utilizou apenas reservas para preservar seus titulares para o duelo contra o Flamengo.

A história do Pyramids começou de maneira modesta, ainda como Al Assiouty Sport, equipe pequena que alternava divisões no futebol local. A virada ocorreu em 2018, quando o clube passou a ser administrado por novos investidores e foi rebatizado com o nome atual. O projeto se tornou conhecido por contratações de impacto e por atrair jogadores estrangeiros, incluindo brasileiros como Keno e Rodriguinho.

Desde fevereiro de 2024, o Pyramids é comandado pelo técnico croata Krunoslav Jurcic, profissional experiente que já passou por clubes da Arábia Saudita, Emirados Árabes, Turquia, Eslovênia e teve destaque no Dinamo Zagreb. O treinador implementou uma equipe organizada, de posse controlada e transições rápidas. É uma formação que busca intensidade no ataque com pontas agressivos e meio-campo combativo.

O elenco do Pyramids combina destaques do futebol egípcio com estrangeiros de diversas partes da África e do mundo. Entre os nomes mais importantes estão:
Fiston Mayele, atacante congolês responsável pelos gols que garantiram a equipe na semifinal da Intercontinental. Ramadan Sobhi, ex-Stoke City, segue como uma das maiores promessas egípcias de sua geração.
Blati Touré, volante de Burkina Faso, e Walid El Karti, meia do Marrocos, compõem um meio-campo forte fisicamente e com boa capacidade de criação.
Mohamed Chibi, lateral marroquino, dá profundidade pelo lado direito.
Ewerton, atacante brasileiro de 28 anos, é uma das novidades do elenco. O amapaense começou no São Bernardo e fez carreira principalmente na República Tcheca antes de chegar ao clube em julho.

O Pyramids possui um dos atletas mais experientes da Copa Intercontinental: o goleiro Ekramy, de 42 anos. Lenda local, ele conquistou nove títulos nacionais com o Al Ahly e disputou a Copa do Mundo de 2018. Apesar da história, atualmente é reserva, já que o titular do gol é El Shenawy.
