The Cleveland Browns’ difficult season took another brutal turn Sunday when they lost rookie running back Quinshon Judkins to a season-ending injury.
Judkins was carted off the field in the second quarter of Cleveland’s 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 16 after taking a hit from linebacker Matt Milano.
The Browns quickly ruled him out, and the team later confirmed that Judkins suffered a broken fibula and a dislocated ankle, ending his rookie campaign, according to Browns.com reporter Mary Kay Cabot.
The injury overshadowed the result as Cleveland fell to 3-12 on the season. Judkins’ year ends with 827 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 230 carries, along with 26 receptions for 171 yards.
While his efficiency dipped at times, the second-round pick finished the season as the Browns’ leader in scrimmage yards and total touchdowns. His role in the passing game had grown late in the year, and he was Cleveland’s leading receiver in Week 16 at the time of his injury.
The Browns will give Sampson back his starting position
Judkins’ emergence came after a slow start to his rookie season, which was delayed by off-field legal issues. Once on the field, he quickly became Cleveland’s most reliable offensive weapon in an otherwise turbulent year.
With rookie Dylan Sampson sidelined for a second straight game due to a hand injury, the Browns were forced to reshuffle their backfield on the fly.
Raheim Sanders, who entered the game with just three carries on the season, finished with 46 total yards on 12 touches. Veteran Trayveon Williams also saw increased involvement, rushing for 17 yards and leading the team with 38 receiving yards.
Sampson is expected to return in Week 17 and should take over lead-back duties when Cleveland faces the Pittsburgh Steelers. The rookie has averaged 2.6 yards per carry this season but is set for his first extended opportunity.
Josh Allen outplayed Shedeur Sanders
On the other side, Buffalo continued its late-season surge. James Cook rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while Ty Johnson added a score as the Bills improved to 11-4 and moved closer to securing a playoff spot. Josh Allen played through a foot injury, completing 12 of 19 passes for 130 yards and adding 17 rushing yards.
Cleveland quarterback Shedeur Sanders completed 20 of 29 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown, but two interceptions led directly to 10 Buffalo points. Sanders also led the Browns in rushing with 49 yards on four carries.
As Cleveland looks ahead to the final weeks of the season, the loss of Judkins leaves a significant void – and serves as another reminder of how quickly promise can turn into adversity during a rebuilding year.
