Es waren ereignisreiche zwei Wochen für Mohamed Salah: Erst die große Klub-Schelte im Interview, der mediale Gegenwind, das Rätselraten um seine Zukunft bei Liverpool.
Doch jetzt steht der Afrika-Cup an. Und offenbar ist Salah voll fokussiert und lässt sich nicht aus der Ruhe bringen. Das sagt zumindest Ägyptens Nationaltrainer Hossam Hassan – kurz bevor der Superstar sein Team zum Titel führen soll.
Hassan erklärte am Sonntag: „Salahs Moral im Training ist sehr hoch, als würde er gerade erst bei der Nationalmannschaft anfangen, und ich glaube, dass er ein großartiges Turnier mit seinem Land spielen wird.“ Ägypten trifft zum Auftakt am Montag in Agadir auf Simbabwe.

Weiter sagte der Coach: „Ich spüre, dass seine Motivation sehr, sehr hoch ist. Salah ist eine Ikone und wird es bleiben. Er gehört zu den besten Spielern der Welt, und ich unterstütze ihn in allem, was er tut.“
Bei Liverpool hatte Salah zuletzt nicht mehr in der Startelf gestanden. Vor seiner Abreise zum Cup of Nations saß er fünf Spiele nacheinander zunächst auf der Bank. Nach dem 3:3 gegen Leeds United hatte er öffentlich erklärt, er sei von Trainer Arne Slot m Stich gelassen worden. Das heizte Spekulationen um einen möglichen Wechsel im Januar an.
Hassan sieht das gelassen: „Ich betrachte das, was ihm passiert ist, nicht als Krise. Solche Dinge passieren oft zwischen Spielern und Trainern.“
[–>Der Nationaltrainer betont, Salah sei voll fokussiert: „Wir stehen von Anfang an mit ihm per Telefon in Kontakt, und ich habe ihn getroffen, als er ins Trainingslager kam. Er ist voll konzentriert auf das Turnier.“
Salah hat den Afrika-Cup noch nie gewonnen, stand aber bereits zweimal im Finale: 2017 gegen Kamerun, 2022 gegen Senegal.

Hassan: „Wann immer Salahs Leistungen bei seinem Klub nachlassen, gewinnt er mit der Nationalmannschaft seine Stärke zurück und wird sogar noch besser – sei es durch Torbeteiligungen oder eigene Treffer. Danach kehrt er sogar stärker zu seinem Verein zurück.“
Und er fügt hinzu: „Er wird den Cup gewinnen, indem er uns hilft – und indem er sich selbst hilft.“ Ägypten trifft in der Gruppe B außerdem auf Südafrika und Angola. Alle drei Vorrundenspiele finden in Agadir statt.
