Andy Reid faces a serious dilemma. Patrick Mahomes’ injury was already a major blow to Kansas City, but losing Gardner Minshew has left the team in an even more desperate situation. Amid this bleak outlook, the Chiefs’ head coach has revealed his plans for the quarterback position.
Mahomes exited the Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Minshew stepped in during the third quarter but was injured the following Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
Whether by coincidence or misfortune, both quarterbacks suffered ACL tears. Mahomes is officially out for the remainder of the season, while Minshew is still awaiting a definitive diagnosis.
With the top two quarterbacks on the depth chart unavailable, Reid was forced to turn to third-stringer Chris Oladokun. Still, the team urgently needs another backup.
Reid and Veach working to complete the roster
While there is no timeline for Minshew’s return, it appears unlikely the seven-year veteran will play again this season.
Oladokun, now in his third NFL season, has only five career snaps and one pass attempt, which came in the 2024 season finale against the Denver Broncos.
Asked in a press conference whether the team would sign another quarterback, Reid responded: “Just by numbers, if that’s the case, Brett (Veach) is on it, looking at different people there.”
Currently, Kansas City does not have a quarterback on its practice squad. That leaves general manager Brett Veach and Reid searching outside the organization-likely among familiar faces.
The Chiefs’ options
- Bailey Zappe – Formerly with the New England Patriots, Zappe spent time on the Chiefs’ practice squad in 2024 and is now with the Cleveland Browns.
- Shane Buechele – Currently with the Buffalo Bills, Buechele signed with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent in 2021 and spent two years between the practice squad and active roster.
- Ian Book – A seven-year veteran and free agent, Book signed with the Chiefs last January but did not make the final roster.
With only two games left in the regular season and the team already eliminated from playoff contention, Kansas City’s goal is simply to fill the roster spot-hoping the new addition won’t be needed.
