The Philadelphia Eagles became the first of the final two undefeated NFL teams to fall on Sunday, but they won’t have much time to dwell on their defeat as they travel to play the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football to kick off the Week 6 NFL schedule. Philadelphia (4-1) is coming off a 21-17 loss to the Broncos, where the Eagles were outscored, 18-0, in the fourth quarter. The Giants (1-4) are coming off a 26-14 loss to the Saints. Jaxson Dart is set to make his third start at quarterback for New York. Kickoff from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., is set for 8:15 p.m. ET. The Eagles are 7.5-point favorites, according to the latest Giants vs. Eagles odds, while the over/under for total points scored is 40.5.

Giants vs. Eagles betting preview, picks

Eagles (-7.5) vs. Giants

The defending Super Bowl champions dropped their first game since before Christmas last week in a 21-17 loss to the Broncos. Since their Week 5 bye last season, the Eagles are 20-3 over their last 23 games, including the postseason and last week’s loss. Although the Eagles haven’t won any of their four games this season by more than seven points, the Giants should provide their easiest matchup on paper this season after playing four games against playoff teams following a Week 1 matchup against the Cowboys with a healthy Dak Prescott. The Giants are 1-4 this season, with their four losses coming by an average of 10.8 points and dropping three of four contests by more than seven points. The Eagles defeated the Giants, 28-3, at MetLife Stadium last year behind former Giants running back Saquon Barkley’s 176 rushing yards, and the model projects another dominant Philadelphia performance against New York. The model projects the Eagles to cover in 61% of simulations.

Over 40.5 points

You may never have guessed that the Eagles have the No. 11 scoring offense in the NFL with all the negativity seemingly surrounding the unit. Despite Jalen Hurts averaging 177.8 passing yards, Saquon Barkley averaging 53.4 rushing yards, and A.J. Brown averaging 38.8 receiving yards this season, the Eagles continue to put up points. They are averaging 25 points per game this season, while scoring at least 24 points in three of five contests. Philadelphia had back-to-back weeks with more than 30 points before its 21-17 loss to the Broncos, and now faces a Giants defense that allowed 26 points to a Spencer Rattler-led Saints team last week. New York ranks 22nd in scoring defense, allowing 25.4 ppg this season. The Eagles have scored at least 28 points in three of their last four games against the Giants, not including Week 18 when they rested their starters last season. Dart makes his third NFL start for the Giants, and he led New York to 21 points against a top-10 defense in the Chargers in his debut at MetLife Stadium. The model projects 43 points for Giants vs. Eagles.

Siegel: Marc Savard’s firing was an unusual half-measure by the Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs didn’t fire head coach Craig Berube on Monday. They fired one of his assistant coaches, Marc Savard, instead, in an unusual half-measure that doesn’t get at the root of the Leafs’ problems this season. There were legitimate reasons for Savard’s dismissal, odd as it was coming 35 games into the season.AdvertisementSavard oversaw the power play and the power play was bad all season long. It has been a significant factor in the team’s troubles: not the factor, but a factor. Each and every stab at a solution — including having Auston Matthews (weirdly) quarterback a five-forward top unit with Easton Cowan — didn’t work. The unit never did feel prepared in the way it had been in previous seasons. There were days when the Leafs didn’t practise it all amid the stumbles, only to show up with a new-look […]

Why Eagles are sticking with Jake Elliott after three missed field goals vs. Commanders

The Philadelphia Eagles are sticking with struggling Jake Elliott, whose two Super Bowl rings with the Eagles outweigh a cold stretch that included three missed field goals Saturday.“He’s had such a great career with so many highs, but like any player, he’s had some moments of struggle as well, and all I’ve ever seen him do is get up out of that and rise from that. I know he went through some struggles last year and ended up having however many field goals and extra points in the Super Bowl and in the NFC championship game,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said Monday. “So I have no doubt in my mind about the competitor he is and the way and how mentally tough he is to be able to rise from this situation as well.”AdvertisementAsked if the Eagles will bring in […]
