Inside Newcastle Q&A: Chris Waugh answers your questions

Newcastle United are enjoying their longest spell between fixtures, international breaks aside, since August.

The usually hectic festive schedule is actually less hectic for Newcastle than the rest of their campaign so far. Competing on three fronts, with a fourth to follow next month, has prevented Eddie Howe from coaching on the training field, so he is relishing the opportunity to do so over the next few days.

But Howe will also be thinking ahead to the January transfer window, so which positions is he keen to strengthen? Should Nick Pope immediately be restored once fit ahead of Aaron Ramsdale? And just what is happening with Anthony Elanga — do those inside Newcastle still believe he will come good?

Most Mondays throughout the season, The Athletic hosts an hour-long ‘Inside Newcastle’ live Q&A with subscribers. Please post your questions below, and our Newcastle writer Chris Waugh will endeavour to answer as many as possible between 2pm and 3pm GMT (9am and 10am ET).

Ohio State coach Ryan Day to take over play calling during College Football Playoff

Head coach Ryan Day said Monday he is taking over offensive play-calling duties for Ohio State through the College Football Playoff.Day is not new to calling plays, as he gave up play calling for the first time before last season when he hired Chip Kelly as the team’s offensive coordinator. When Kelly left for the NFL, Day promoted Brian Hartline, who called plays this season through the 13-10 loss to Indiana in the Big Ten title game. But with Hartline juggling duties as offensive coordinator at Ohio State and as the new head coach at South Florida, Day is stepping back in.AdvertisementHartline was announced as USF’s coach on Dec. 3. He is expected to remain in the press box during games, but he’s focusing on coaching the receivers while still having input in the offensive game plan. “It’s a lot on […]

Can the Cavaliers — the NBA’s most expensive team — snap out of their funk?

What a difference a year makes. Last season, the Cavaliers set a franchise record by going undefeated in their first 15 games en route to a tidy 64-win campaign. Things are not going quite so smoothly this time around.  These Cavs are a game above .500 after losing four of their last five, a stretch that included back-to-back defeats to the Bulls and a home loss to the Hornets. The lone win was against the Wizards, who are still technically a professional basketball operation. Cleveland eked that one out by four points.  There are a lot of problems for Kenny Atkinson's crew at the moment, health and availability being right near the top. Darius Garland has only played 13 of 29 games. Jarrett Allen, 18. Evan Mobley, last season's Defensive Player of the Year, was cruising right along and playing […]

Fantasy Basketball Week 10 Start/Sit: Cam Spencer emerges as a must-start with Memphis playing four games

'Tis the season to be jolly, or so they say. With Christmas upon us, we enter what is basically a six-day week. However, surprisingly, the schedule is relatively 'normal', with only one team playing twice, that being the Brooklyn Nets. We have 18 teams suiting up three times, while the remaining 11 teams will take to the court on three occasions each. Sitting players who only go two or three times has its advantages, but fantasy managers still have to make smart decisions when figuring out whom to play, regardless of game count. Being aware of back-to-back sets is also a key factor, especially with so many teams now sitting players due to injury management.Four Games: CLE, DAL, DEN, DET, IND, MEM, NOP, OKC, ORL, POR, UTAThree Games: ATL, BOS, CHA, CHI, GSW, HOU, LAC, LAL, MIA, MIL, MIN, NYK, PHI, […]

NHL rumblings: No panic in Predators, no easy fixes for Maple Leafs and more

Barry Trotz held firm earlier this season when people were calling for him to make a coaching change. For many general managers, the allure of the coaching-change bump can be hard to resist when the walls seem to be closing in around them.Trotz, one of the winningest head coaches in NHL history, resisted and backed Andrew Brunette.AdvertisementHis team has since responded, now winning seven of their past 10 games.“Sometimes people focus in on wins and losses and not necessarily the process,” Trotz told The Athletic on Monday. “Fortunately, I can see the process downstairs here — how the coaches are working with the players, how the players are responding to the coaches. I just felt that the players were not giving up on the coaches, and the coaches weren’t giving up on the players. They actually were coming together.”Added Trotz, who’s […]
