„Nejsme adepti na titul. Jsme tam, kde jsme, protože jsme opravdu konkurenceschopní. Kluci se doopravdy každý zápas snaží dostát nárokům, které stanovujeme, a zároveň být konzistentní. Nejsme ještě úplně spokojeni, ale poslední víceméně tři roky jsme konzistentní a končíme na předních příčkách. Musíme zůstat pokorní a vědět, jak získávat body jako třeba proti United,“ uvedl čtyřiapadesátiletý Španěl.
Po prvních pěti kolech aktuální sezony anglické ligy měl jeho tým jen tři body a dal při tom jediný gól. Od té doby ale Aston Villa získala 33 z možných 36 bodů. „Na začátku sezony jsme se kvůli různým okolnostem nesoustředili na ligu na 100 procent. Prohráli jsme některé zápasy, protože jsme ještě nebyli tam, kde jsme teď,“ prohlásil Emery.
„Postupně jsme budovali tým, zlepšovali se takticky i individuálně a dostávali do hráčů mentalitu, kterou teď ukazujeme. Samozřejmě máme dál na čem pracovat. Jsme v dobré formě,“ mínil někdejší kouč Valencie, Paris St. Germain, Arsenalu či Villarrealu.
Aston Villa doma vyhrála 10 soutěžních zápasů v řadě. „Děkuju fanouškům za to, jak přenášejí na hráče svou energii. Cítíme se tu fantasticky, hráči se tu cítí silní a jistí a připadá jim to tu jako naše pevnost. Chci fanouškům vzkázat, aby si užívali každý moment a zápas,“ řekl Emery.
Sebevědomí se přenáší i na hráče. „Nejdůležitější na utkání s Manchesterem je, že jsme vůbec nebyli na svém maximu a stejně jsme zvítězili. To je známka velmi dobrého týmu. Tým si věří nejvíc za tu dobu, co tu jsem. Cítíme, že vyhrajeme každé utkání,“ prohlásil záložník Morgan Rogers, který proti United vstřelil oba góly „Villans“.
Birminghamskému celku se daří i v ligové fázi Evropské ligy, kde vyhrál pět ze šesti utkání a patří ke třem nejlepším týmům.
