In a stunning twist that has dominated tennis headlines, world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and his longtime coach Juan Carlos Ferrero have gone their separate ways after a sevenyear partnership that delivered extraordinary success.

What makes the situation even more fascinating is the vocal reaction from one of tennis’s most respected figures: Toni Nadal, uncle and former coach of Rafael Nadal. Speaking with Spanish media, Toni Nadal strongly challenged narratives suggesting Alcaraz played no role in the coaching split, insisting it would be unrealistic to believe the decision was made without the player’s approval.
“Nothing is done without Carlos’ approval,” Nadal asserted, reflecting on the unusual series of events that brought one of the sport’s most effective collaborations to an end. Nadal, who has guided Rafael Nadal to legendary status, is known for his blunt and honest commentary, making his perspective particularly notable.
According to media reports, the catalyst for the breakup centered on the renewal of Ferrero‘s contract. After years of a smooth, routine extension process, this round reportedly included a demand that Ferrero respond to a new agreement within 48 hours, a condition Nadal described as “a bit strange” given their long history together.
Ferrero ultimately declined the deal, and their professional ties were severed as a result. The speed and rigidity of the contract negotiations, combined with the delay in sending the new terms, appeared to have strained a relationship that had otherwise been stable and productive.

Nadal‘s analysis suggests that the split was influenced by factors beyond just a legal document or salary terms. He pointed to the evolving dynamic between a maturing athlete and his mentor, noting that as Alcaraz grew in stature and confidence, his influence over decisions naturally expanded.
