Skotský křídelník Robertson strávil v Nottinghamu prakticky celou kariéru. S Forest vyhrál v roce 1978 hned po postupu z druhé ligy anglickou ligu a v následujících letech výrazně pomohl týmu k triumfům v Poháru mistrů evropských zemí, dnešní Lize mistrů. Ve finále proti Malmö v roce 1979 nahrál na jediný gól Trevoru Francisovi a o rok později proti Hamburku rozhodl o úspěšné obhajobě vstřelenou brankou sám.

„Odpočívej v pokoji, Robbo… náš největší,“ rozloučil se dnes Nottingham se svou hvězdou, kterou označil dlouholetý trenér Forest Brian Clough za „Piccasa našeho sportu“.

Za Skotsko nastoupil Robertson ke 28 zápasům, byl na mistrovství světa v letech 1978 a 1982. Po skončení kariéry působil jako asistent svého bývalého spoluhráče z Nottinghamu Martina O’Neilla v různých klubech, na příklad v Aston Ville.
