Tragická událost se stala 21. prosince. V černohorském areálu Savin Kuk došlo k defektu lanovky, na níž seděl Hertner se svou manželkou. Sedačka se uvolnila a narazila do té za ní. Následný pád asi ze sedmdesátimetrové výšky Hertner nepřežil, jeho žena vyvázla se zlomenou nohou.
„Jsme neuvěřitelně zarmouceni, rádi bychom vyjádřili nejhlubší soustrast rodině i blízkým. Odpočívej v pokoji, Sebastiane,“ napsal na sociálních sítích ESTV Hamburk, kde Hernter ještě na podzim působil v roli kapitána.
Hertner strávil nejdelší část profesionální kariéry v Erzgebirge Aue, kde působil čtyři sezony. Zahrál si ale třeba i za rezervu bundesligového Stuttgartu, Darmstadt nebo Mnichov 1860. Právě tam mimo jiné i po boku známého maďarského brankáře Gábora Királyho, jenž se proslavil chytáním v širokých, šedivých teplákách. Fotbalovým fandům se nejvýrazněji vryl do paměti na Euru 2016.
V součtu Hertner odehrál 95 zápasů ve druhé bundeslize, 122 ve třetí nejvyšší soutěži a přes stovku v nižších, regionálních ligách.

The 34-year-old, most recently with ETSV Hamburg, is being mourned by clubs across Germany.
