Ukrajinec Bondarčuk závodící v barvách Sovětského svazu se stal v roce 1969 v Aténách mistrem Evropy ve světovém rekordu 74,68 metru a o měsíc později jako první kladivář v historii překonal hranici 75 metrů (75,48).
