Pittsburgh linebacker T.J. Watt participated in practice all week, leaving the decision of whether to play him Sunday at Cleveland in the hands of Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

Watt and Nick Herbig were on the field Friday for the third consecutive day.

But Watt was not made available for his usual Friday media session, a possible indication he’s not fully cleared to play this week.

Watt, 31, hasn’t played in the past two games after sustaining a partially collapsed lung while undergoing a dry needling treatment on Dec. 10 that was intended to stimulate muscle recovery. He had surgery the following day to stabilize and repair the lung.

He has seven sacks in 13 games in 2025.

With Watt out and Herbig fighting a hamstring injury, Tomlin said the team trusts Jack Sawyer will be ready to go if needed after he stepped up the past two weeks.

“Love the work that Jack gave us,” Tomlin said. “Certainly, love the work that Alex Highsmith gave us, although we anticipated it from him. But (Jeremiah) Moon as well. Schematically and strategically, you don’t replace T.J. and Herbig. We understood that.”

If the Steelers clinch a playoff berth on Saturday night by virtue of the Green Bay Packers beating the Baltimore Ravens, Watt and several others could be held out Sunday afternoon at Cleveland.

If the Ravens win at Green Bay, the Week 18 finale between AFC North rivals in Pittsburgh decides the division.

Tomlin said the questions with Watt are not football-related but “medical” in nature, limiting his insight on the matter. From a strictly football standpoint, Tomlin said Watt appears to be fully healed.

Week 17 NFL injury report: Updates on Lamar Jackson, Jordan Love, Josh Allen, more

We are in the thick of Week 17 in the NFL, with the Christmas Day slate already providing us with three matchups. Now, as we look towards the rest of these games on the docket, the playoff picture in the NFL is coming more into focus. Thursday's action officially ousted the Detroit Lions from playoff contention and, in the process, clinched a playoff berth for the Green Bay Packers. As for the rest of the slate, the Houston Texans can clinch a playoff berth with a win on Sunday, while various division titles could also be handed out in Week 17 if certain dominoes fall. While we'd simply like to just focus on the various playoff clinching scenarios throughout the league, injuries are going to play a central storyline to Week 17, as it does every week in the NFL. Below, we'll […]

‘Sometimes you need to adapt’: Why Amorim finally changed Man Utd formation

"Sometimes you need to adapt and there is no tactic in that moment," said Ruben Amorim after Manchester United's 1-0 win over Newcastle. He was responding after acknowledging that he had gone with a back six late in the game. His patched-up side were holding on with Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot playing ahead of the full-backs in a six-man defence. Of course, the fact that Amorim had been playing a back four at all was a fascination and an indication that his team is evolving tactically. There was a time when he would not have countenanced such a thing but he feels a little more emboldened now, able to adjust from a position of relative strength having got United up to fifth - and potentially even higher before a difficult 2025 is through. The reason for that growing confidence owes […]

Rookie QBs Cam Ward, Tyler Shough face off in Titans-Saints

Tyler Shough had to wait until the second round and the 40th overall pick before the New Orleans Saints made him the third quarterback drafted. In between, the New York Giants used the 25th pick to grab Jaxson Dart. The gap between the performances of Ward and Shough as rookies hasn't been nearly as big as the one at the draft. Come Sunday, they'll be closer than ever as they face off as professionals for the first time when the Saints visit the Titans in Nashville. Ward has been the […]
