VAR denies Villa equaliser as 10-player Brentford dent title ambitions

VAR controversially disallowed Tammy Abraham's equaliser for Aston Villa on his second debut for the club as 10-player Brentford held on for a narrow 1-0 win.The Bees were reduced to 10 following a moment of madness from Kevin Schade when he kicked out at Matty Cash but found the perfect response when Dango Ouattara fired them ahead four minutes later, in what was a frantic end to the first half. Tammy Abraham, making his second Villa debut in the starting line-up alongside Douglas Luiz, thought he had marked his return to the club with a swift equaliser after the restart, only to see it controversially ruled out following a lengthy VAR delay due to the ball going out of play in the build-up, 19 seconds before it went in. Ekitike and Wirtz shine as vintage Liverpool return to beat Newcastle

Hugo Ekitike scored twice as Liverpool produced one of their most convincing performances of the season to come from behind to beat Newcastle 4-1, rising above Manchester United into fifth in the Premier League table. Arne Slot's side have been criticised for a lack of flair in recent weeks but there was no shortage of style in their first league win of 2026, scoring more than two goals at Anfield for the first time since opening night against Bournemouth. Ekitike was the chief tormentor, aided by Florian Wirtz, now the Premier League's most prolific duo having combined for six goals in all competitions. Liverpool had to overcome an early setback after Anthony Gordon scored from open play for the first time in a year, but the remainder of the game was dictated by the dynamism of the hosts' attacking quality. Both Glasgow sides play on Sunday. United handed a debut to former Charlton goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer, who was pitched straight in for his first appearance since August.Hearts made three changes to the side which started last Sunday's 2-2 draw with Celtic, with goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow restored alongside Jordi Altena and Oisin McEntee. The draw leaves Dundee three points ahead of their opponents in ninth, while St Mirren are just three points clear of 11th-placed Kilmarnock. The home side made four changes from their draw with Livingston, handing starts to recent signings Young and Kion Etete. Maswanhise nets double for Motherwell as Livingston troubles continue

Tawanda Maswanhise's first-half double helped move Motherwell to within two points of Celtic as they won 2-0 to deepen Livingston's relegation troubles. The in-demand Zimbabwe international was clinical with two efforts from close range in a one-sided first half. Motherwell comfortably saw the game out to move within touching distance of Celtic, who host Falkirk on Sunday. Livingston's predicament at the bottom of the Premiership worsened after this defeat left David Martindale's side six points adrift of Kilmarnock. The hosts actually had a great chance to go ahead inside two minutes but Connor McLennan saw his effort brilliantly saved by Motherwell goalkeeper Calum Ward. Stevie May did brilliantly to break free before Scott Pittman flicked a pass to the winger and despite only having the 'keeper to beat, Ward managed to force McLennan's shot behind for a corner. And Livingston were punished […]

Rangers beaten by Porto to conclude dismal European campaign

Rangers’ first-half collapse saw them conclude their dismal Europa League campaign with a 3-1 defeat by Porto in the Estadio do Dragao.Gers attacker Djeidi Gassama headed the visitors in front after just six minutes but they soon fell apart with some calamitous defending and goals from teenager Rodrigo Mora, Francisco Moura and an Emmanuel Fernandez own goal before the break left Danny Röhl's side reeling, with the Portuguese side comfortably fending off an improved Govan side after the break. Rangers were already out of the competition before kick-off but it was a first defeat in nine games for the Ibrox side, who at times in the first half reverted back to early-season form. Watkins injury mars comeback win as Villa seal top-two spot

Substitute Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba scored a late winner as Aston Villa came from two goals down to beat RB Salzburg 3-2 and finish in the Europa League top two, but the victory was marred by an injury to Ollie Watkins.Villa, already assured of a place in the last 16, picked up their seventh win from eight games in the group phase the hard way but Watkins was forced off with what looked to be a hamstring injury. Villa boss Unai Emery says the club will know more about the extent of the injury on Friday. "He felt something, but not a lot," Emery said. "We will test him tomorrow and hopefully we are thinking maybe not a lot [of time]. But I don't know if he is going to be available or not for Sunday." Please use Chrome browser for a […]

Jesus scores twice as Forest ease past Ferencvaros but miss out on top eight

Igor Jesus scored twice as Nottingham Forest defeated Ferencvaros 4-0 at the City Ground in their final Europa League game of the league phase. The convincing win was not enough to secure a place in the top eight because of results elsewhere so Forest will feature in the play-off round next month. But it was a confidence-boosting victory for Sean Dyche's side as they built on their improved form. Forest did have an early scare courtesy of their Hungarian opposition when Kristoffer Zachariassen's header struck the frame of the goal but Robbie Keane's side capitulated thereafter, overwhelmed as the Premier League side launched attack after attack. Team news Sean Dyche named Ola Aina, Murillo, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Morgan Gibbs-White among the substitutes so there were opportunities for Zach Abbott and James McAtee from the start. Dan Ndoye went close before Ryan […]
