Diego Dedura-Palomero lay on the clay in Munich, soaking in something he could barely put into words.
The German, 17, became the first player born in 2008 to win an ATP Tour main-draw match when his opponent, Denis Shapovalov, retired with illness. Dedura-Palomero won the first set of their Munich Open match 7-6(5) and led 3-0 in the second when Shapovalov called a doctor to the court for a medical timeout.

The players then shook hands, before Dedura-Palomero roared with delight, drew a cross shape in the clay and lay down on it in celebration.
“I had so bad luck because there were three of the four lucky losers who got in. I was the fourth one … And then Monfils pulled out, he hugged me and was so nice,” he said in his post-match interview, referring to Gael Monfils, whose withdrawal from the main draw gave Dedura-Palomero his spot.
“I just can’t describe in words, I’m just so happy right now it’s actually crazy,” he said.

Dedura-Palomero had beaten American world No. 100 Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of qualifying, before losing 6-3, 6-3 to Alexander Bublik, the current world No. 78 who was inside the top 20 in May 2024.
Dedura-Palomero is coached by his parents, Cesar Palomero and Rūta Deduraitė-Palomero. His father is Chilean, and his mother is Lithuanian, with Dedura-Palomero being born in Berlin.
He joins Grand Slam champions Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, as well as his opponent Shapovalov, to be the first player from his birth year to win an ATP Tour main-draw match.
