Ein gemeinsamer Auftritt von Star-Basketballerin Caitlin Clark (24) und Olympia-Ikone Eileen Gu (22) bei der Fashion Week in Mailand sorgt für Diskussionen – allerdings weniger wegen Mode, sondern vielmehr wegen der Reaktionen in den sozialen Medien.
Die Basketballerin vom WNBA-Team Indiana Fever besuchte eine Prada-Show und saß dort neben Freestyle-Superstar Gu, die bei den Olympischen Winterspielen in Mailand und Cortina drei Medaillen gewann. Ein gemeinsames Selfie der beiden Athletinnen verbreitete sich rasch im Netz – und löste eine Welle gemischter Reaktionen aus.
Vor allem in den sozialen Medien äußerten einige Fans deutliche Kritik an Clark. Hintergrund ist die seit Monaten kontrovers diskutierte öffentliche Wahrnehmung von Gu. Während manche User das Zusammentreffen zweier Spitzensportlerinnen feierten, sahen andere darin einen problematischen PR-Moment. „Sich mit dieser Frau so kumpelhaft zu zeigen, ist kein guter PR-Schachzug von Clark“, schrieb eine Person in den sozialen Medien.

Andere wiederum zeigten sich begeistert von dem prominenten Duo. „Wer will noch so schnell wie möglich eine Kollaboration zwischen diesen beiden Ikonen?“, fragte ein Fan. „Sie sind ein perfektes Duo“, erklärte ein anderer.
Ein weiterer Nutzer relativierte die Kritik und verwies auf die Rahmenbedingungen der Veranstaltung: „Es sind zugewiesene Sitzplätze. Bei einem gesponserten Event. Clark hat einen Vertrag mit Prada. Viel kann sie in dieser Situation nicht machen.“

Erst vor wenigen Tagen griff der frühere NBA-Center Enes Kanter (33) Gu scharf an und stellte ihre Entscheidung infrage, bei den Olympischen Spielen in Italien für China anzutreten. „Ich sage es einfach: Sie ist eine Verräterin“, sagte Kanter. „Sie wurde in Amerika geboren. Sie ist in Amerika aufgewachsen, lebt in Amerika und entscheidet sich, gegen ihr eigenes Land anzutreten – und das ausgerechnet für den schlimmsten Menschenrechtsverletzer der Welt, China. Sie hat ihren Ruhm in einem freien Land aufgebaut und entscheidet sich dann, ein autoritäres Regime zu vertreten.“
